Antelope Canyon is one of the most intriguing places on earth. It is visually unlike anything that exists on the planet, a slot canyon that has been carved over thousands of years through the sandstone floor of the rock by flash flooding. Rain from different parts of the desert collect and flow quickly through the area, ultimately following the same path over and over again and deepening the carved canyon every time they pass through. Because the canyon was carved by flash flooding and not by continually flowing water, there is a danger that goes along with touring the canyon. Flash flooding comes without warning, and can sweep away and kill anyone in the canyon when it happens. For this reason there have been numerous steps taken to insure the safety of guests, including safety railings and other aspects that can allow people to hold on if water was to rush through. The most important safety feature is that they do not allow tours by any group that is not certified as understanding the dangers, and will not allow tours of any kind if there is a possibility of a flash flood in the area. This means any rainfall at all within about a five mile radius of the canyon, which is continually observed by both the National Weather Service and by Navajo Nation who operate the canyon tours. If you have ever seen photographs that were taken at Antelope Canyon, or videos, you probably want to go there and experience it for yourself. It is one of the most unique visual experiences in the world and cannot be had anywhere else. Antelope Canyon itself is a slot canyon that was cut by flash flood water over thousands of years, which ultimately means that you can walk through the canyon on the floor, where in most canyons a river or flowing water is going to be present. Without the flowing water that created the slot canyon, you end up with an  eerie crack in the earth that you are able to move though, with huge sandstone walls on each side. This feature also makes the canyon quite dangerous if it is not approached carefully, and there have been several significant losses of life there in the past century. After all, the canyon was created by flash flood water, which ultimately means that any time a flash flood happens it is still being constructed. The very nature of flash flooding is that it can happen without warning and take you by surprise, which is why no tours are allowed if there is any chance of this happening. Flash flooding can occur from rainfall that happens beyond eyesight areas and up to five miles away, so ultimately tours are only allowed during times when there is absolutely no chance of rain in the vicinity. This is monitored by by the National Weather Service and independent weather services provided by Navajo Nation, who operate the canyon territory. If you plan a visit to southwestern national parks like Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon or even protected spaces like Monument Valley, then you are going to have to do some driving. These areas are remote, and are not surrounded by any cities that support commercial airline traffic. This means that if you do not live in the southwestern portion of the US, you are going to have to fly  into a starting point city and then either drive or arrange for transportation to the park from there. The two cities that make the most sense as starting points are Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, depending on which parks you plan on visiting. The majority of the parks are about 4 hours or so from the city, and Zion is actually quite close to Las Vegas being only about 2.5 hours drive. The flights coming into and out of Las Vegas are generally cheaper as well, just because there are so many more people traveling to the destination.
