The Grand Canyon is visited by millions of people every year, and is considered to be one of the places that you must visit before you die. The sheer magnitude of the Grand Canyon is beyond comparison to any other canyon on earth, and as a result people from all over the globe plan trips to the park every year. While nobody is going to say that a trip to the Grand Canyon is going to be disappointing, many underestimate exactly how difficult it is to get there if you are attempting to do it on your own. The best areas of the canyon are quite remote, and are going to take some planning to visit.
The first thing you are going to need to decide when planning your Grand Canyon trip is what starting point you will be traveling from. The reason this is important is because the Grand Canyon is actually located around 4.5 hours from the nearest city that will have an airport that can support commercial traffic. The majority of people who visit the Grand Canyon who also do not live in the southwest will travel to Las Vegas, and then make the drive to the park from there. You can expect to be driving for at least a half day through very remote desert conditions on your way to the park. You will need to make sure your car is in good operating order and you have enough gas to make it to the next station. You will also need access to maps in case you get lost, as a wrong turf can literally take you hundreds of miles out of the way. Once you have made the drive you will then need to understand which are the areas and activities that you want to do, as time is short if you are trying to only spend one day in the area. A far better idea is to plan a multiple day trip with multiple stops at different parks. The parks are closer to each other than the drive directly from Las Vegas, so most people whoa re planning a trip will first go to Zion then Bryce, and eventually on to the Grand Canyon. Doing this maximizes your amount of exploration time and minimizes the driving time.
