If you are going to tour the Grand Canyon, you are going to have to prepare. To put it mildly, it is pretty remote in it's location, and it is pretty far from just about everything. It's closest town is Page Arizona where you will be able to find hotels and even dog kennels to store your pets while you are out hiking, but unless you are from Nevada, Utah or Arizona the drive is probably going to be pretty difficult for you. The closest cities that support actual commercial airline traffic are Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, and both of these places are more than four hours drive from the Grand Canyon. Another thing to consider is that this means more than four hours driving a rental car that you are not used to, through the desert. The desert is pretty boring and anyone who has ever done a long desert drive can attest to the fact that four hours will seem like eight hours when everything looks the same. There is almost nothing in between the areas on the way except more desert, so be prepared for a trip that is pretty grueling.  If you plan on trying to come back the same night, you will be doing more than 9 hours driving in a single day, and having a good deal of time spent outside on that same day. President Woodrow Wilson designated Grand Canyon as the 15th national park on Feb. 26, 1919, after decades of lobbying to protect the 277-mile gorge carved to a depth of more than a mile by the Colorado River. In it's first year as a national park, it was visited by about 38,000 people, and that number has gone up a little bit over the years. In 2018, more than 6.8 million people visited the canyon, most making the drive of about 280 miles from Las Vegas. On Tuesday, the Grand Canyon celebrates it's 100th year as a national park, and festivities are planned throughout the week to mark the occasion. If you are not lucky enough to be there during this historic period, there will be plenty of pictures being posted on social media accounts to make you feel as though you were there. Make note that this is celebrating 100 years of the designation as a national park, which includes only the actual national park area. If you accidentally take one of the many tours from Las Vegas to the west rim instead of the south rim, you will not be within the national park area and will not see any of the celebration activities. Generally our most popular tours that visit the Grand Canyon are multi-day adventures that will also visit other national parks in the area. We will generally approach it this way because the amount of time that it takes to drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon is relatively significant (roughly 4.5 hours) and will take a good portion of your day. When you travel that much of a distance to just get to the park entrance, it doesn't leave you a lot of time for exploration before the sun starts to go down. We prefer to have the Grand Canyon be a stop on one of our multi-park tours because we can minimize the driving time on any one day by traveling to the nearest park first, then on to the next one after that. Because the national parks are generally closer to each other than to the city, we find that our guests have a more interesting experience, and also get to see multiple national parks which are all unique in their own way. Our Grand Canyon tours will also visit Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Monument Valley. Longer tours will also visit areas like Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell. There is an issue about touring the Grand Canyon that has developed over the past few years, and it is increasingly becoming a problem for thousands of tourists. Visitors to Las Vegas will often book an excursion that will visit the Grand Canyon during their vacation, due to the fact that Las Vegas is within driving distance of the natural phenomenon. While this would seem to not pose any issue and the thousands of people who Google "Grand Canyon tours" every month (more than 14,000) would be presented with options from different tour companies going to the same place, instead what we find is that many tourists are accidentally booking tour that take them to a different area. While this is still technically the Grand Canyon, it is not the national park area that you have seen in books and magazines. Instead, it is a lesser developed area on Hualapai land about 2 hours from Las Vegas. It seems beneficial that the drive is only half the distance, and that there is a large glass bridge there known as the "Skywalk," but in reality many are disappointed. The area is far less developed and has less rich foliage and animals than the national park area, and ultimately presents visitors with little more to do there than take a few pictures and walk on the bridge. Many have actually complained that the large manmade structure spoils the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon, which is the purpose for touring the area in the first place.
